Network+ Certification Exam Tutorial: Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

When you re studying for the Network+ exam, you ve got to master the fundamentals of networking, because the Network+ is a hard exam to pass due to the range of information covered. One such fundamental is the Address Resolution Protocol, commonly referred to as ARP.
ARP operates at the Data Link layer of the OSI model, and its purpose is often overlooked. When Host A wants to send data to Host B, we know Host A must have a destination IP address for Host B (the Network layer address). What we tend to overlook is that Host A must also have a Layer 2 destination address for Host B -- in other words, it s got to have a destination MAC address for Host B. That s where ARP comes in.
Host devices, as well as switches and routers, keep a table that maps IP addresses to MAC addresses. This is an ARP Cache, and in our scenario Host A would first look in its own ARP Cache to see if it has a corresponding MAC address for Host B. If not, Host A will send out an ARP Request. This request is a broadcast, which means that every single device on the network segment will get it. (The broadcast MAC address is ff-ff-ff-ff-ff-ff.)
The ARP Request contains the IP address of the destination host, in this case Host B. The Request is basically saying, "Here s the IP address of the host I need to talk to. Will the device with this IP address send me its MAC address?"
Every host on the segment will receive the Request, but only the device with the IP address contained in the Request will respond to it. In this example, Host B will send a unicast ARP Response to Host A, telling Host A what its MAC address is. Host A now has the IP and MAC address for Host B, and can now send data successfully to Host B.
Since the ARP Request is a broadcast, there is no problem if there is a hub, repeater, or switch physically between Host A and Host B, since those devices forward broadcasts. Routers do NOT forward broadcasts, however, so if there is a router between Host A and Host B, there could be a problem. There is an ARP feature that addresses this problem, though, and we ll talk about that in my next Network+ exam tutorial!

Let s say you re going to examine the spanning tree protocol (STP) setup of a new client. You re used to working with newer 2950 switches, and you ve always run show span on those switches to display spanning-tree information. Then, you run show span on a Catalyst 5000 - and something like this shows:

Do You Read On The Train?

I don t know about you, but I see more people with PDAs on trains reading things on there instead of reading paperbacks, or newspapers.

Is this the future we are looking at?

Will newspapers of a morning be unobtainable anymore?

Will we get our daily news via the PDA?

Perhaps connected to a "Smartphone" for downloading the newspaper to the PDA?

Or will "Smartphones" take over the task of the PDA?

Will newsprint not be available in a few years time, also magazines at the bookstall?

Will public libraries not be a place you will go to and sit down and read? Or will they be a network hub with servers all over the place for people to instantly download, not only the daily newspaper, but any textbook, manual or book, straight onto their "Smartphone" and read things on the move?

The saving on paper and ink would be enormous, as would the manpower, distribution resources, bookbinding for we could all read digitally, future generations will not know what a paperback is or a newspaper, unless they get saved in museums.

The race has been on for some time to preserve our modern culture in digital form, all the classic story tellers who are now in the public domain are being transposed into digital ebooks so future generations will be still able to read them. So many books have been pulped in the paper mill it is still unknown how many authors works have been destroyed right to the last copy.

The race is on too, for the thousands of collectors of first editions by popular authors, who scan every shelf at the second hand bookstore or market stall and even it seems, at the local Oxfam charity shops! The word is that the Oxfam charity in the UK took over thirteen million pounds sterling in the year 2003 just in old books donated to their stores. I find this totally incredible, but their figures don t lie.

Providing we have our userid and password we could login and change our nameserver info, contact info or any number of functions.

Once we have changed our name server info there is generally a propagation periodnas the internet as a whole updates with new dns information. For a new domain name, you can count on anywhere from 12 - 24 hours. For a domain name that is already in existance, and has already been moved, it can take anywhere from 12 - 72 hours. There is no definitive time, unfortunately.

There have been instances of propagation taking two weeks or more.

Recommendations to keep your domain name maintenence hassle-free:

Buying a Video Card

Stunning visuals don t have to cost an arm and a leg with cheap graphics cards (aka video cards). Unless you are a hardcore gamer, you don t need to have the best of the best and a cheap graphics card will do you just fine. Now I m not saying you should skimp on getting a good video card, but find one that fits your needs.
For example, a work computer should just have integrated graphics on the motherboard. Integrated graphics means that it s already built into the motherboard without having to get anything extra so it s perfect for workstations. On the other hand, a serious gamer needs to get a good video card that can handle anything a game can throw at it.
Heh, I m guessing you aren t here because you need a cheap graphics card for your work computer. You are looking for a good video card, right? Well, you have two options: an expensive card could let you play all the games with all the settings on high or you could get a decent one that can handle games on the low or medium settings.
I d probably go with the second option since you get more bang for your buck. Buying a top-of-the-line video card will run you over $400 while a decent one will be around $200. Now, if you need the best of the best, go for it, but you can get a cheap graphics card that is almost as good for half the price.
AGP vs. PCI? What s the difference? Well, the newer cards are coming out for PCI express slots because they are much faster than AGP. What does that mean? The bottom line is better performance so make sure to get a motherboard with PCI express slots that can handle the new video cards.
Now if you are on a budget and want to save some money or your motherboard doesn t have a PCI express slot, get an AGP. I will warn you that AGP video cards might be totally replaced so make sure to upgrade later.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Cheap graphics cards need to be upgraded much more often than other parts of the computer. Since so many games push the limit of what a computer can do(Halflife 2, Battlefield 2), video cards need to be made better and better.

Counting Pages and Giving Titles

How many total pages will you need? Well, that would depend on the content you plan to include.
